Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterised by the progressive decline of cognitive functions, including memory, reasoning, orientation, language, and judgment. Contrary to common belief, it is not a natural part of ageing. Individuals with dementia often experience changes in mood, behaviour, and motivation, while remaining conscious and aware in the early stages. Over time, however, the condition can lead to severe disability, loss of independence, and increased caregiving demands.
Behavioural and psychological symptoms are common and often place a significant emotional and practical strain on families and caregivers. What if nearly half of all dementia cases could be delayed — or even prevented? According to the 2024 Lancet Commission on Dementia, up to 45% of dementia cases may be linked to 14 modifiable risk factors. These include elements such as physical inactivity, poor diet, social isolation, hearing loss, hypertension, smoking, and unmanaged diabetes. In other words, simple, consistent changes to the way we live and early detection of risk factors through regular health screening could significantly reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
If you’re concerned about your brain health or looking to take preventive steps, Meru Eco Clinic offers comprehensive health screenings to help you assess and manage these risk factors early.
