Flu vs Common Cold vs COVID-19 – Know the Symptoms

Respiratory illnesses are more common during Malaysia’s rainy seasons (December–March and May–August), due to humidity and indoor crowding.

Key Symptom Differences:

  • Influenza (Flu): Sudden onset with high fever (≥38°C), chills, muscle aches, fatigue, dry cough, and sore throat. Flu can lead to complications like pneumonia, particularly in high-risk groups such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
  • Common Cold: Gradual symptoms including nasal congestion, sneezing, scratchy throat, mild cough, and low-grade fever. Symptoms are generally mild and resolve within a week without major disruption.
  • COVID-19: Characterized by fever, dry cough, fatigue, and notably, loss of taste or smell. Shortness of breath and gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, nausea) may occur. Severe cases require urgent care.

Prevention Strategies:

Early detection and treatment of illness, Influenza vaccination, practising proper hand hygiene, mask use when unwell, and maintaining proper ventilation are effective strategies for prevention of respiratory illnesses.

By understanding these differences and combining vaccination with preventive habits, you can safeguard your health during Malaysia’s high-risk periods.
